2 Weird Things That Have Completely Transformed The Way I Sleep

The High Performance Journal - May 30th 2023

The older I get the more I prioritize my sleep.

This has become more true since the birth of my second daughter and while I may not be able to get the hours I need I can always improve the quality of my sleep.

When you do the research on sleep you realize that it's one of the best legal performance-enhancing drugs on the planet.

If you took away the fact that it's a necessity and rounded off their benefits you'd think this was some kind of steroid.

You become smarter, build muscle, enhance recovery, reduce stress & anxiety and you regulate your hormones all while protecting your brain and heart from disease.

On the other hand, depriving yourself of sleep is one of the most dangerous things you could do to your health.

It reduces activity in the brain responsible for controlling your mood and making decisions. Long-term sleep deprivation can lead to heart disease, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimers, and dementia.

I talked about it in length on this thread here:

Getting a good night sleep is one of the most important things you could do for your body.

So in this email, I want to share with you two of the weirdest things that have given me (and my clients) a huge ROI when it comes to improving sleep quality.

A big part of sleep is getting the hours you need. We won't be talking about this or about having a sleep schedule or getting morning sunlight. These are what I consider to be the basics of getting a great night of sleep.

What I'm about to share with you is outside the realm of what's considered to be normal.

So as you read this I ask that you read it with an open mind.

2 Weird Things That Have Transformed My Sleep

Mouth Taping

Mouth breathing forces your lungs to take in too much air, which can cause snoring & can affect your oral health.

Mouth breathing is a negative for sleep & your teeth People who mouth breathe are more likely to develop sleep disorders.

Mouth taping allows me to breathe through my nose. This helps put my body in what's called a parasympathetic state (aka. relaxed state) and can also reduce sleep apnea.

Before mouth taping, I've always dealt with multiple sleep disruptions at night. Once I woke up it would become harder to go back to sleep.

After taping my mouth most nights I go to sleep faster with almost zero disruptions. Not only does it help me sleep better it also makes me feel more energized the next day.

This is due to the fact that mouth breathing forces the body to run through the sympathetic nervous system aka. fight or flight mod and this becomes especially harmful at night.

By taping my mouth I'm forced to breathe through my nose. This helps induce a calmer state while releasing nitric oxide allowing me to more deep sleep & REM sleep.

This has been critical to me being able to do what I call "time traveling" which simply means putting my head on the pillow and "time traveling" to the morning without waking.

Increased Electrolyte Intake

When I would wake up I would go to the bathroom multiple times a night.

This was super annoying and was something I thought I had to deal with for the rest of my life. I thought it was because I had a small bladder but that wasn't the issue.

My issue was a lack of hydration due to insufficient electrolyte intake.

Sodium promotes the release of vasopressin, which is an antidiuretic hormone that  to support deep sleep. Low potassium has  to higher levels of anxiety and sleep disturbances. Magnesium has been shown to have calming effects on our brains.

Hydration plays a huge part in your sleep quality. showed that in a group of more than 20,000 adults, those who self-reported sleeping less than six hours on average each night were associated with a higher likelihood of inadequate hydration.

When drinking water it's not always about how much you drink. It's about how much you retain. Electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and magnesium help us retain more water, which allows us to become more hydrated.

I use electrolyte powders like  and  but you can start with finding a high-quality sea salt as most have the elements I've described above.

After drinking these I went from several middle-of-the-night trips to the bathroom to zero.

Your sleep greatly improves when you're not waking up to go pee multiple times a night.

It Pays To Be Weird

Since making these changes I've seen a huge increase in my sleep quality and this is needed due to the lack of sleep a new baby can bring to your life.

While I may not always get the hours I need I can focus on the quality of my sleep.

The same goes for you. Regardless of the hours you get you can always improve how well you sleep when your head hits the pillow.
